Video Game Console Sales Comparison (11/06-8/08)

With data using NPD Group released sales information TGDaily has published the following graphs illustrating video game consoles sales data from November 2006 to the latest August 2008.

The current sales leader Nintendo Wii outships the Xbox 360 and PS3 combined, but note that this was the fifth decline in a row and shipments are off from 721,000 in March 2008. Xbox 360 shipments were down less than 5% from 204,800 in July 2008 to 195,200 in August 2008. For the PlayStation 3 shipments went down from the 224,900 in July 2008 to 185,400 in August 2008.

Cumulative Wii shipments in the U.S., according to NPD, now stand at 12.01 million. The Xbox 360 follows with 10.87 million and there is little reason to believe that the PS3 can close that gap anytime soon. Cumulative PS3 shipments in the U.S. are at 5.26 million.

It should be interesting to see how the upcoming holiday 2008 season unfolds.

Nintendo DS becomes American obsession

It prints money! With more than 10 million Nintendo DS systems sold in the Americas, the handheld game console is the fasted selling game system in the world.

Swallow this amazing fact if you can: there are close to nine Nintendo DS or DS Lite portable game systems sold every 60 seconds. Sure, this number may seem small when compared to other addicting products like cigarettes, alcohol, video poker, or Paris Hilton, but this is a gaming system we are talking about.

“More than 5 million people joined the ranks as Nintendo DS owners in America last year alone,” says Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime. “And right now, they’re all saying the same thing — ‘give me more!’ Fortunately, no matter your taste or experience in gaming, that’s exactly what we’re supplying in the months to come.”

Nintendo has kept manufacturing yields high in order to meet demand for the popular handheld, and on average has been launching 5-7 news games each month to help keep gamers interested. According to Nintendo, they will launch 20 new DS games within the first three months of 2007. Continue reading to view the list of those launch titles:
