Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood

Sonic Chronicles

With Bioware developing the new Sonic RPG for the Nintendo DS this is one title to keep a close eye on. Recently IGN awarded Sonic Chronicles as runner-up to the Best Nintendo DS RPG at E3, if you are curious which game was given top honors, it was Square’s Chrono Trigger DS. Sonic Chronicles is due in stores this coming Fall, in the meantime you can watch the latest trailer for the game here.

Mushroom Men: Rise of the Fungi

Mushroom Men: Rise of the Fungi

Gamecock Media Group brings us the first installment of Mushroom Men for Nintendo DS, this original 3D platformer developed by Red Fly Studios is due October of this year.   Rise of the Fungi will be a prequel to Mushroom Men: The Spore Wars which is also scheduled for October release for the Nintendo Wii, both Mushroom Men titles will feature original music by Les Claypool.

Resistance Retribution

Coming Spring 2009 this portable version of Resistance being developed by the same team that brought us last year’s PSP Game of the Year, Syphon Filter, looks great. Check out the following trailer and screenshots of Resistance Retribution.

Guitar Hero: On Tour

Picture of Guitar Hero On Tour with DS

With the recently released Guitar Hero: On Tour for the Nintendo DS the popular franchise is now available in portable form. You may wonder how well Vicarious Vision was able to simulate playing guitar with the DS. Check out this video from Activision that demonstrates the new “guitar” attachment that’s bundled with the game.

The peripheral is called the “Guitar Grip”, it’s slightly smaller than a Nintendo DS Lite and plugs into the GBA cartridge slot of the DS.  While it was designed for the DS Lite, there is a small adapter that’s removable that makes it fit the larger original Nintendo DS model.

One difference between the console version and DS is the removal of one of the fret buttons, the four fret buttons are located on the side of the unit near the cartridge slot, there is a wriststrap included to help you keep your grip while playing.

You play Guitar Hero: On Tour like a book (similar to Ninja Gaiden: Dragon Sword and Hotel Dusk: Room 215), and use the included pick-shaped stylus on the DS touchscreen to “strum” with your free hand.  You apply whammy by moving the stylus across the on-screen whammy bar or anywhere on the touchscreen.

Here is the mostly favorable review by Geoff Keighley:

Video Game Ads: 1977-1995

Take a trip down memory lane with the following video. The trip begins with some of the first Atari 2600 television advertisements and continues with almost 20 years of video game commercials. This great compilation of ads reminds us of our gaming past with legends like Mickey Mantle selling on demand intellivision, and Phil Hartman playing a wide range of characters for Philips CD-i. There is even a young Tobey Maguire cutting class to play the huge Atari Lynx in the boys room.

Some great early ads demonstrate families playing video games together, while classic GameBoy ads remind adults that your never to old to play games. The video comes to a end with Jaguar & Sega’s crass advertisements during the 90’s that I remember liking at the time, actually were really pretty awful.

Gameloft remakes classic Oregon Trail game for cell phones

1up spoke with Gameloft’s vice president of production, Julien Fournials about their remake of the MECC classic Apple II game Oregon Trail that was one of the highlights from computer lab back in elementary school.

When asked about the remakes updated:

We chose to go with a cartoony style for the updated version of the game. As you probably recall, the graphics for the original Oregon Trail were quite old, pixeled and grainy. A cartoony style seemed to be the best choice to take the edge off and allow for a wider range of animations. We have also zoomed in closer to the characters, so you can see the events unfold. For example, rather than being told in a message that a bear has attacked someone, you can see the bear come out of nowhere and maul a party member, in a humorous manner of course.

Any other changes?

It was important for us to stay true to the core storyline, but also update it for today’s gamer whose expectations are a bit higher. Buying specific items and supplies at the shop has been removed. This was done to make the game more accessible to the casual player. We replaced the specific items with general stats such as Supplies and Food. This way the user only has to manage a few resources and focus on keeping the party healthy and moving towards Oregon.

New mini games - offering more places where the player must make a decision; events (bandits, bears); alternate routes; and being able to see your party on screen.   Hunting is now objective driven with an increasing level of difficulty as the player progresses. The controls were designed to allow the player to move and shoot in any direction. Animals were given AI to react to the player.

There are a total of five mini-games - Hunting, Fishing, River Crossing, Rafting and Repairing mini-games, all of which will have new levels to unlock as an incentive to complete each objective.

We have also added various difficulty levels to make the game slightly more casual.

Could this remake be considered an educational game?

All the locations were taken from the actual historic sites from the Oregon Trail (also found in the original game). Throughout the game, players will be given various facts about the Oregon Trail and the landmarks they visit. Although some elements were added merely for entertainment value, this remake can be considered a very fun educational game for today’s audience.

Historical figure Marcus Whitman is also featured in the game, and journeys along the Oregon Trail during the same time players do. Marcus Whitman was an American physician and missionary in the Oregon County who started a mission in 1836 that became a stop along the Oregon Trail. He also led the first large party of wagon trains along the Oregon Trail, establishing it as a viable route for the thousands of emigrants who used the trail in the following decade.
