Rainbow Six Vegas 2: Fan Pack

Hi everyone,

I am very pleased to announce that Ubisoft will be releasing a Fan Pack to all Rainbow Six fans. I am also here to give you better insight and clarification on what the Fan Pack contains:

The Fan Pack includes an Update for the game and DLC (downloadable content). The first thing that may come to mind is: “Is this free?” Yes it is, including the DLC. This pack will be available via Xbox Live Marketplace, PlayStation Network and ubi.com in July 2008. You can find out more about the Fan Pack in this video.

*** Update Features ***

New Ranks
An additional 99 Elite Ranks have been added for bragging rights. For those of you who are already Elite, you may have noticed that your XP continued to accumulate while playing. Once you have the update, your XP will automatically be applied towards the new Elite ranks, so it is possible that you have already ranked up multiple times past Elite.

New A.C.E.S.
A total of 100 A.C.E.S. are available for each category: Marksman, CQB and Assault. Each A.C.E.S. level past 20 will reward you with 5000 XP that applies to your rank. For players who have already reached A.C.E.S. 20 and continued to collect A.C.E.S. points, you will be happy to know that the update will automatically advance you to the level you have earned. For example, if you have enough A.C.E.S. points to reach Marksman 25, you will automatically be at Marksman 25 and earn 25000 (5000 x 5) towards your next Rank.

Grenade Indicator
When you are within the damage radius of a Frag or Incendiary grenade, an indicator will appear on-screen telling you which direction it is. The indicator can show multiple grenades at once.

Weapons & Gadgets Balancing
Here are a couple of notes about Weapons and Gadgets:
• Explosion delay of the incendiary grenade has been increased
• Detonation speed of the C4 has been slightly increased
• Increased the damage of Sniper Rifles at long range
• Increased the base accuracy of the Light Machine Guns
• Adjusted the rate of fire for some of the Assault Rifles, Shotguns and an SMG
• Sped up the time it takes to zoom in & out with weapons, making it more responsive

To better clarify: the zoom for all firearms have been significantly sped-up and you can now fire DURING the zoom transition.

Respawns in Team Deathmatch – Host Option
An added host option has been added for Random Respawns. Random Respawns OFF will play like the classic Versus style where each team spawns in their designated Alpha or Bravo base. Random Respawns ON will have your players spawn randomly throughout the map after they die the first time.

Voice Chat – Host Option
Added as a host option for Player Match & System Link, players now have the option to talk to their team mates while dead.

Score in Deathmatch
Displayed on the bottom left of the HUD in Deathmatch, players can now see their score along with the top opponent’s score.

Team Leader - Spawn Change
Players now respawn next to the leader by default, unless players specifically choose to spawn back at the base.

Show Dead Players in Lobby
Players who no longer have lives remaining will now have a skull icon displayed next to their name in the pause menu.

Terrorist Hunt Spawning
Terrorists will no longer spawn right in front of you or behind you, or in a room you just cleared.

* * * * *

High Stakes Setting
High Stakes is a host option for every Versus mode that really pushes tactical gameplay to the next level. Here’s a detailed description of High Stakes:

Limited HUD (High Stakes)
The Radar is disabled. Enemies will not be visible on the Tactical Map (back button on 360/select button on PS3). Grenade indicator is disabled.

Health System (High Stakes)
Health regen is disabled. If you are shot and close to death, you’ll enter a visual state of critical health (screen turns monochromatic).

Cover System (High Stakes)
The cover system as been changed in High-Stakes mode to encourage players to peek instead of pop-n-shoot. The camera has been moved so your character cannot look past their cover unless they expose themselves around a corner.

Weapons & Gadgets (High Stakes)
Aim Assistance has been completely disabled. Bullet spread has also been increased when not zoomed-in (you will notice your crosshair indicators are much wider when not in zoom). Realistically, a person holding a gun would have better aim when zoomed-in than when he’s walking around. This encourages players to really take aim instead of run-n-gun. Also remember that the zoom time has been sped-up and you can now fire WHILE you zoom in and out. Players now have less ammunition (1 for each gadget you choose and less clips for your guns) so you really need to play conservatively and rely on precision use of ammo.

Kill Camera & Friendly Fire (High Stakes)
Kill Camera is always disabled and Friendly fire is always enabled.

*** DLC ***

THREE FREE MAPS
There are three maps included in the free DLC: Murdertown – Dark, CQB Training – Dark and best of all the much-requested fan favourite Calypso Casino! The three map layouts have not been changed. The re-lit “Dark maps” have a very eerie atmosphere, and may require players to use night vision to spot enemies. Calypso Casino returns with updated lighting and textures. The three maps are playable in all Versus modes and Terrorist Hunt.

This Fan Pack is dedicated to all of you in the Rainbow Six community. Everything in this update and DLC comes directly from you on the forums, private messages to us and even matches the team has played with you all online. We’d like to sincerely thank you for your continued support and feedback. See you online!

Update by Ubi.Vigil:
We’re sure some of you are wondering when it will be available on platforms other than UK PS3s. This early release was a result of a miscommunication with Sony, we apologise for any confusion or frustration this sudden release caused. Until the release of the update in other PS3 territories, UK PS3 players will only be able to play with other UK players.

The full Fan pack, including all maps, fixes and changes, will be available on PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 in early July.

Halo 3 Legendary Map Pack Dissection

Xbox 360 Fanboy posted this preview to the upcoming April 15th Halo 3 DLC ‘Legendary Map Pack’. Expected to cost 800 MS Points ($10US) this content will add 3 new multiplayer maps:

  • Avalanche: A reimagingation of Halo: Combat Evolved fan favorite, “Sidewinder”, “Avalanche’s” size makes it ideal for big ol’ games of Halo 3. “Avalanche” is a Forerunner power station set on a glacial shelf on an under-construction replacement for Installation 04.

*Best Gametypes: Multi-Flag CTF, One Flag CTF, One Bomb, Team King, Team Slayer

  • Ghost Town: A medium-sized map designed for one-sided games ideal player counts range from 4 to 10 players. Ghost Town is the battle-scarred remnant of a war-ravaged hydroelectric plant in the foothills of Mt. Kilimanjaro.

*Best Gametypes: Team Slayer, One Flag CTF, Multi-Flag CTF, One Bomb

  • Blackout: It’s not a reimagination, it’s a remake of one of Halo 2’s most beloved maps. “Blackout” very nearly speaks the same language that its predecessor, “Lockout”, spoke to Halo 2 players. Its long lines of sight and interconnected platforms preserved, but in a new location: a frigid UNSC research station beneath the low lights of the aurora borealis.

*Best Gametypes: Team Slayer, One Flag CTF, One Bomb

CoD4: Map Pack - Not Delayed according to Infinity Ward

This information was just posted by Infinity Ward’s Robert Bowling at IAMfourzerotwo:

Despite what the internet might tell you (including some “official” sources), the Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare variety map pack has NOT been delayed until the 10th. As of right now we’re pushing certification for an on-time release for April 3rd or 4th. As of right now though, I’m being told that it’s a good chance it will be released worldwide (except for Japan) tomorrow night / early-Friday morning.

With that said, we also have a new video up on Gametrailers that show off the new maps in action, so check it out above.

For those of you asking when you should take off work, I’d take off Friday, as it looks like they should be available late Thursday night / early Friday morning, which means Friday you should be able to play all day. Also, those of you who have tokens already (either from Game of the Year edition or won them at the Gamestop event we held) you’ll be able to use them as soon as the Map packs are available on Xbox Live.

Update for those of you who bought the Game of the Year Editions:

I see a lot of questions for those of you who have the Game of the Year Editions and visited http://gameoftheyear.callofduty.com/ where all the April 10th delay date rumors spawned from. However, I wanted to let you know that I am currently working to get that changed so that it reflects the correct release date of the maps (April 4th) as well as allows users who buy the GOTY edition to redeem their code for a token as soon as the maps are available (on April 4th) instead of April 10th. I hope that clears up any confusion and I will keep you updated if anything changes, but I wanted to let you know I’m working to make sure you’re taken care of.

[UPDATE] Just to confirm CoD4 maps are available for download. I personally downloaded the Variety Pack at 9am (PST) - 800 MS Points and 446mb download took less than 5 minutes.

We need episodic video games that rival ABC’s Lost

lost_600.gif

What will it take for episodic video games to catch on? I think the success ABC has experienced with Lost and it’s 60-70 episodes over the past 3 seasons (currently Lost is ranked 2 of 16,626 over at tv.com) is no doubt related to the shows content. I think that when episodic video games can deliver a smart well told story with intense gameplay set in an a realistic environment, this type of game will be accepted into our gaming culture.

This latest generation of gaming devices currently have the capability of content delivery that is much faster and more economical than the current $49.99-$59.99 Ghost Recon, Madden & Miyamoto model.

Massive multiplayer games while immersive, seem more about leveling up your character and traveling a large game world. In contrast episodic video games will deliver 100+ hours of intense gameplay, spanning 20+ episodes over the course of ayear. The game world, filled with interesting characters you actually care about, a well written storyline unfolding in a realistic manner, it’s basically what publishers consider the ultimate intellectual property. Reason being they publishers are developing their own content, and the product delivered is more accessible to mainstream gamers.

Companies like GameTap,Valve & 2k Games consider this to be a lucrative market it seems that everything is in place for episodic games to go mainsteam, so which publisher will strike first? Will GameTap or Valve find mainstream success with one of their upcoming games before Sony or Nintendo hit the market with a episodic game of their own, or will Grand Theft Auto on the 360 deliver enough episodic content to satisfy gamers to the extent that a network television series like Lost is already delivering to fans today?

Annex

Objective: Capture and hold key locations to collect enough points to win the round.

Description: In Annex, you win by keeping control over key map locations, or objectives, long enough to collect a winning number of points. Every map has two to five identified objectives available for capture, with one objective active at a time. Objectives are based on map weapon-spawn locations and have a potential value of 60 points toward either team’s score. Teams collect those points by maintaining ownership of an objective until all its 60 points have been distributed. Every second that a team controls an objective, the team gets one point. When an objective falls to zero points, the next objective is selected at random.

On the HUD, the current objective appears below the team scores at top left. This indicator contains several pieces of relevant information. The weapon icon inside the circle indicates which weapon-spawn location is being used as the objective. The compass along the outer edge of the circle shows the relative direction to the objective. The number inside the circle indicates how many points remain at that objective and the background icon color indicates which team currently controls it. No color means the objective awaits capture, a red icon means the Locust Horde hold the objective and a blue icon means the COG hold it. When the icon in the indicator circle fills, the corresponding team’s score also changes color, the team begins collecting points from the objective, and the point value of the objective drops.

On the map, a projected ring marks the physical location and boundaries of the objective in the world. The ring’s color indicates the current captor: White means neutral, blue COG, and red Locust. To capture an objective, players must stand inside the glowing ring uncontested for a short period of time. How long depends on how many teammates stand in the ring at once. One player can capture an objective in eight seconds, two players in four seconds, three players in two seconds, and four players in one second. Once a team takes an objective, they are not required to remain inside the ring to maintain ownership. The captured objective’s points drain until an opposing team member enters the ring, or until its points fall to zero.

Round scores can be set as low as 120 points or as high as 480 points. The first team to reach the target score wins the round.

Respawns: Infinite, wave-based every 15 seconds.

Options:

  • Selected Map: Which map or series of maps to use.
  • Number of Rounds: Number of rounds required to win the match.
  • Bleed-out Duration: Amount of time before a player dies while DBNO.
  • Round Score: Number of points required to win a round.
  • Friendly Fire: In a player match, whether teammates can damage each other.
  • Private Slots: In a player match, number of player slots reserved for friend invites.
  • Weapons Swapped: In a player match, whether the person who sets up the match can determine whether weapons that appear in the maps are replaced or removed.

Updates:

  • Annex became available as a Gears of War multiplayer game mode in the April 9 update.
