Gears of War 2: First Gameplay Footage

Check out this first look at Gears of War 2 gameplay.

Coming to the Xbox 360 this November this video features lead designer Cliffy B introducing us to a preview of actual gameplay from the campaign portion of the game.

Judge for yourself, but I think this game looks awesome with tons of enemies and a new cover system that looks well implemented.

If you enjoyed the first Gears of War you won’t want to miss this!

Gears of War updates June 14th: adds more Achievements, Map Pack and improved Roadie Run

Gears gets better control and more June 14th

This was announced over at Major Nelson’s earlier today, note that this is the most up-to-date time according to the Major.

It has just been announced that Gears of War will be getting a title update tomorrow, June 14th after 0900 GMT/0200 PT. Inside the Title Update, you’ll find eight new Achievements for the “Annex” gametype and the “Hidden Fronts” Multiplayer Map Pack on Xbox LIVE.

250 Achievement points will be up for grabs when the update is released June 14thIn addition to adding new Achievements, worth a total of 250 points, Epic has improved the Roadie Run controls so players have greater control of their movement. The title update will also help squash multiplayer exploits and provide general housekeeping.

The “Annex” gametype is now available for free and the “Hidden Fronts” Multiplayer Map Pack is available on Xbox LIVE Marketplace for 800 Microsoft Points.
All four multiplayer maps will be available for free after Sept. 3, 2007.

from the official Gears of War website:

Gears of War™ Gears Up With A New Game Type

What’s old and new and red all over? That would be Gears of War, once a new multiplayer game type is released by way of a download from Xbox LIVE® on April 9. Read on to get the specs on the new way to enjoy a game you already love, and then hop online to experience multiplayer all over again!

Annex

Objective: Capture and hold key locations to collect enough points to win the round.

Description: In Annex, you win by keeping control over key map locations, or objectives, long enough to collect a winning number of points. Every map has two to five identified objectives available for capture, with one objective active at a time. Objectives are based on map weapon-spawn locations and have a potential value of 60 points toward either team’s score. Teams collect those points by maintaining ownership of an objective until all its 60 points have been distributed. Every second that a team controls an objective, the team gets one point. When an objective falls to zero points, the next objective is selected at random.

On the HUD, the current objective appears below the team scores at top left. This indicator contains several pieces of relevant information. The weapon icon inside the circle indicates which weapon-spawn location is being used as the objective. The compass along the outer edge of the circle shows the relative direction to the objective. The number inside the circle indicates how many points remain at that objective and the background icon color indicates which team currently controls it. No color means the objective awaits capture, a red icon means the Locust Horde hold the objective and a blue icon means the COG hold it. When the icon in the indicator circle fills, the corresponding team’s score also changes color, the team begins collecting points from the objective, and the point value of the objective drops.

On the map, a projected ring marks the physical location and boundaries of the objective in the world. The ring’s color indicates the current captor: White means neutral, blue COG, and red Locust. To capture an objective, players must stand inside the glowing ring uncontested for a short period of time. How long depends on how many teammates stand in the ring at once. One player can capture an objective in eight seconds, two players in four seconds, three players in two seconds, and four players in one second. Once a team takes an objective, they are not required to remain inside the ring to maintain ownership. The captured objective’s points drain until an opposing team member enters the ring, or until its points fall to zero.

Round scores can be set as low as 120 points or as high as 480 points. The first team to reach the target score wins the round.

Respawns: Infinite, wave-based every 15 seconds.

Options:

  • Selected Map: Which map or series of maps to use.
  • Number of Rounds: Number of rounds required to win the match.
  • Bleed-out Duration: Amount of time before a player dies while DBNO.
  • Round Score: Number of points required to win a round.
  • Friendly Fire: In a player match, whether teammates can damage each other.
  • Private Slots: In a player match, number of player slots reserved for friend invites.
  • Weapons Swapped: In a player match, whether the person who sets up the match can determine whether weapons that appear in the maps are replaced or removed.

Updates:

  • Annex became available as a Gears of War multiplayer game mode in the April 9 update.

Gears of War: download Annex new multiplayer game type at no charge next week

gow1.jpg

One of my favorite websites 2old2play had this info regarding the upcoming content for Gears of War. Devin Grimes wrote,

“Despite many of it’s noticeable flaws, Gears of War’s multiplayer aspect continues to be supremely addicting as well as the top Xbox LIVE title week after week. But more adroit gamers out there have been taking advantage of many of the game’s glitches, rendering a bad experience for many of the newer gamers.

On the official Epic Games forums, Vice President Mark Rein posted a new thread stating:

The next title update for Gears of War is currently going through the certification process. We’ll have more detail about the update next week but I can tell you that in addition to fixing a whole bunch of glitches, and providing 720p for VGA users running at 1280x1024, it will contain a brand new multiplayer game type called Annex…Yes it will be free.

That last part is especially pleasing. Personally, I thought that the last add on pack would be the only free one, but it looks like Epic is standing by their tradition of supporting gamers long after the game has shipped—and for free. Annex sounds interesting, although let’s hope it’s just not another Assassination.

5 player team in Gears of War?

Microsoft exec touts Fenix as hero of Gears of War “trilogy”

don't need no stinkin' helmetCorporate VP of Global Marketing Jeff Bell has spit out some new evidence that suggests Microsoft is banking on Marcus Fenix to be the next Master Chief. Speaking on the much-circulated Gears of War ad, Bell told GameDaily, “The goal of this ad is to establish Marcus Fenix as the hero of the Gears of War trilogy.”Given Gears’ open ending, the sequel is a near-guarantee. After that, turning the franchise into a trilogy
is simple. Just chop the sequel in half and save the leftovers for Xbox’s third incarnation.

So is there room enough in the ‘Box for both the Master and Mr. Fenix? Think we’ll ever see the franchises
cross paths? Heck, they did a Battletoads & Double Dragon — anything could happen.

Gears of War: After hours ending clip

Gears of War: GameStop hosting after hours preview event

Gears of War Select Gamestop stores are hosting a special Gear of War event tonight after closing up shop. Why didn’t we tell you about this earlier? There are two reasons. First, they’re only showing video of the game, it won’t be playable — yes, we’re excited about it … but not that excited. Second, the giveaways are pretty weak: lanyards and pins. Where’s the free shirts or — even better — demo discs? Really, exclusive video content? Isn’t this what Xbox Live was made for?

Since we’re loathe to recommend that you run down to your local Gamestop on a Saturday night to crowd in and watch video of a game you’ve undoubtedly pre-ordered and will be playing in a couple weeks, we’re extremely pleased to present you with … the very same video footage they’ll be showing tonight! So, unless you have a real hankering for those lanyards and pins, and an absolute void where your social life should be, we think you oughta skip Gamestop tonight and start practicing for playing Gears.
