Halo 2 vs Halo 3: Multiplayer Comparision

Wonder how Halo 2 multiplayer compares to the upcominng Halo 3 multiplayer? Well the following video presents both back to back and side to side comparisons of the two versions and does a great job of showing differences and similarities between the two Halo titles.

Halo 3 ‘Narrows’ gameplay

Here is a 1 minute 55 second look at the upcoming ‘Narrows’ multiplayer map for Halo 3 recently shown at PAX 07. It’s too bad the guy playing this slayer match is crappy at Halo but at least the audience seems into it. If you can endure watching you get a early look of what looks to be a pretty sweet looking map for custom games or playing matchmaking on Xbox LIVE.

Super Mario Galaxy: E3 Trailer

Super Mario Galaxy

Nintendo Wii Fanboy had these details to share Super Mario Galaxy:

The game is incredibly charming and creative, and filled with life that make it a clear killer app for the console.

Firstly, the game looks absolutely stunning. Not only does it run in 480p and in widescreen, the game features some beautiful colors, fantastic texture work, and some stellar special effects. The Mario character model is easily the best we’ve seen in any Nintendo game so far: it’s not hard to think that the in-game cut-scenes are pre-rendered at times. Galaxy, at the very least, shows that the Wii is a capable piece of hardware, so long as developers take time and care with it.

and they also mentioned this about multiplayer mode:

We also got to try the “multiplayer” mode, in which the second controller can act as another pointer to help Mario: it can stun enemies, and Mario as well. A player that refuses to play well with others will want to point at Mario, stopping him in his tracks.

Expect this title in November exclusive to Nintendo Wii.

Bungie says graphical improvements coming to Halo 3 this September

halo3graphics.jpg

Bungie’s Frank O’Connor spoke with NextGeneration about the public’s reception to the beta and any changes in the game in the months between now and launch on September 25.

He said, “Well to be honest, we’ve seen them [the graphics] praised too. Multiplayer is by necessity a more sterile iteration of our graphical style and will always be tuned for performance and elegance rather than jamming the screen full of pixels. We think that the final aesthetic look of our game will be judged at launch in September and in part based on the more intense single player spaces. We’re also focused on maintaining the Halo character and atmosphere in our visual design – we’re competing with ourselves, and not simply trying to match the aesthetic of other games. We think that folks will be happy with Halo 3’s graphical polish come September.”

He added that there would be some changes in the months ahead and that the game has not been seen in its complete form, “We have a long time to polish and iterate on the largely complete game at this point. We’ll be working on some big ticket items as well as making sure that the little details, like decorators and shaders are all in place. Lighting and atmospherics are going to be big keystones in our look and feel, and those really haven’t been shown except in multiplayer to this point.

There have been no complaints about Halo 3’s gameplay, and the title is sure to be a blockbuster.

O’Connor said the game had been the product of “constant iteration, fine tuning and about six years experience in making console FPS games”. He added, “Philosophically, it’s making decisions at the start that you’re pretty sure won’t come back to bite you later – like including a balanced spawning weapon, making sure that the equipment add-ons are at least theoretically self-balancing, and applying the years of good feedback and data we have from Halo 1 and 2. Hopefully this beta process will supply even more data for subsequent fine-tuning. It’s already paying dividends for our network and matchmaking test process.”

O’Connor continues, “I think it’s safe to say there will be lots of visual surprises in Campaign and a few nifty graphical improvements in multiplayer.” The biggest challenge in development has been getting the right people on board. “It has been a challenge, hiring lots of people, managing dozens of them, making sure we have the best of the best and that we have space, equipment and resources to build next-gen content. Next-gen requires a lot of content. And a lot more people to build it.”

from the official Gears of War website:

Gears of War™ Gears Up With A New Game Type

What’s old and new and red all over? That would be Gears of War, once a new multiplayer game type is released by way of a download from Xbox LIVE® on April 9. Read on to get the specs on the new way to enjoy a game you already love, and then hop online to experience multiplayer all over again!

Annex

Objective: Capture and hold key locations to collect enough points to win the round.

Description: In Annex, you win by keeping control over key map locations, or objectives, long enough to collect a winning number of points. Every map has two to five identified objectives available for capture, with one objective active at a time. Objectives are based on map weapon-spawn locations and have a potential value of 60 points toward either team’s score. Teams collect those points by maintaining ownership of an objective until all its 60 points have been distributed. Every second that a team controls an objective, the team gets one point. When an objective falls to zero points, the next objective is selected at random.

On the HUD, the current objective appears below the team scores at top left. This indicator contains several pieces of relevant information. The weapon icon inside the circle indicates which weapon-spawn location is being used as the objective. The compass along the outer edge of the circle shows the relative direction to the objective. The number inside the circle indicates how many points remain at that objective and the background icon color indicates which team currently controls it. No color means the objective awaits capture, a red icon means the Locust Horde hold the objective and a blue icon means the COG hold it. When the icon in the indicator circle fills, the corresponding team’s score also changes color, the team begins collecting points from the objective, and the point value of the objective drops.

On the map, a projected ring marks the physical location and boundaries of the objective in the world. The ring’s color indicates the current captor: White means neutral, blue COG, and red Locust. To capture an objective, players must stand inside the glowing ring uncontested for a short period of time. How long depends on how many teammates stand in the ring at once. One player can capture an objective in eight seconds, two players in four seconds, three players in two seconds, and four players in one second. Once a team takes an objective, they are not required to remain inside the ring to maintain ownership. The captured objective’s points drain until an opposing team member enters the ring, or until its points fall to zero.

Round scores can be set as low as 120 points or as high as 480 points. The first team to reach the target score wins the round.

Respawns: Infinite, wave-based every 15 seconds.

Options:

  • Selected Map: Which map or series of maps to use.
  • Number of Rounds: Number of rounds required to win the match.
  • Bleed-out Duration: Amount of time before a player dies while DBNO.
  • Round Score: Number of points required to win a round.
  • Friendly Fire: In a player match, whether teammates can damage each other.
  • Private Slots: In a player match, number of player slots reserved for friend invites.
  • Weapons Swapped: In a player match, whether the person who sets up the match can determine whether weapons that appear in the maps are replaced or removed.

Updates:

  • Annex became available as a Gears of War multiplayer game mode in the April 9 update.

Gears of War: download Annex new multiplayer game type at no charge next week

gow1.jpg

One of my favorite websites 2old2play had this info regarding the upcoming content for Gears of War. Devin Grimes wrote,

“Despite many of it’s noticeable flaws, Gears of War’s multiplayer aspect continues to be supremely addicting as well as the top Xbox LIVE title week after week. But more adroit gamers out there have been taking advantage of many of the game’s glitches, rendering a bad experience for many of the newer gamers.

On the official Epic Games forums, Vice President Mark Rein posted a new thread stating:

The next title update for Gears of War is currently going through the certification process. We’ll have more detail about the update next week but I can tell you that in addition to fixing a whole bunch of glitches, and providing 720p for VGA users running at 1280x1024, it will contain a brand new multiplayer game type called Annex…Yes it will be free.

That last part is especially pleasing. Personally, I thought that the last add on pack would be the only free one, but it looks like Epic is standing by their tradition of supporting gamers long after the game has shipped—and for free. Annex sounds interesting, although let’s hope it’s just not another Assassination.

5 player team in Gears of War?

Halo 3: Multiplayer: Let’s Party!

As part of their month-long Halo 3 marathon, 1UP sat down with a few Bungie developers to talk up the upgrades being made to the upcoming shooter’s online matchmaking system. The central focus of their system will be parties and how to get your friends to play with you in both ranked and unranked matches.
This method differs from the current XBL king Gears of War, which does not (officially) allow friends to play ranked matches together.

Gears developer Epic has stated that the reason its title lacks a clan-friendly matchmaking system for
ranked play is Microsoft’s certification process. Bungie producer Allen Murray counters that notion in the interview, however, by explaining that Microsoft does allow parties of friends in ranked matches but does “not provide that feature as part of the core set of matchmaking services.”

In other words, it’s up to the developer to program the system, and Bungie feels it has learned enough from its Halo 2 experience to optimize the system they already have in place.

The interview talks a lot about custom rules matches and their efforts to promote the play. There aren’t a lot of specifics, and much of what is said is subject to change between now and then. If you want to get a feel for the general design philosophy Bungie has, this should satiate you.
